Meeting Kate Batts

Kate Batts was your typical little girl, just like any other, as stated by a family who had known her before the incident. “In the beginning, Kate had been a normal little girl” (Welsh 112). Kate was nothing more than a young soul, innocent and full of promised life. Unfortunately, this American dream would soon turn for the worse for Kate. Her parents both died while Kate was very young. At that time, she then went to live with her grandparents, who were quite cruel to her (Welsh 112). The disastrous outcome of a life she had to endure profoundly affected the young girl's mind. Kate eventually found herself bound to a cave away from home. It is rumored this cave she fancied had no distinct location to determine how far she had wandered from the house of her grandparents. After this reported information is given, we don’t hear anything about her growing up after this runaway action. The last thing talked about dear Kate Batts was that she married a man by the name of Frederick Batts, whom she loved dearly.

Although there is no further explanation on how Kate became a poltergeist, nor even how she died, the telling stories and tales of her wrath as the witch are given tremendously. This demonic entity character that Kate played substantially was said to have offered many differing explanations for her origin. Ranging from tale to tale of “I am the spirit of a person who was buried in the woods nearby, and the grave has been disturbed, my bones disinterred and scattered, and one of my teeth was lost under this house, and I am here looking for that tooth” (Zimmerman 1). After the Bell family fell for her deceiving tale, she mocked them for their easy gullibility and lack of common sense.
