The Bell family was ordinary, not particularly different from any other. John Bell and his wife Lucy Williams decided they were going to move to Tennessee on a spontaneous whim, with the consideration of other families moving and living in the area. They ensconced themselves in Tennessee with good judgment of land, scoring 300 acres of land for them to farm upon. Across this acreage, they built a family home in regard to their nine children.

The community in which the Bells placed themselves upon began to quickly take a liking to the family. Luckily, the family found themselves in prosperous farming terms, rising successfully in the industry. Although they seemed to be flourishing in their newly found accomplishments in the company, they were becoming accustomed to , things began to take a tumble downhill for the Bells.

Despite their social progress, an issue between John Bell and a member of one of the families he traveled with, would portray him in a more questionable light.

A man by the name of Frederick Batts found John Bell to be a foe no longer, after he suffered a traumatic accident whilst working on his own farmed property. The result of this injury meant he had the inability to recover speedily, lessening his way of providing for his family.

Because of this life-altering injury, Batts set about selling property as an attempt to continue living. With this came the knowledge that John Bell owned a substantial amount of Fredericks land, not foreseeing the quarrel that would later be caused by this. reportedly, John Bell bought this very land for a largely reduced price, way less than what it was worth. It is said Bell knowingly understood the hardships that Batts had to face and took advantage of this fact.
